We get calls from La Jolla Shores and up around Bird Rock the same week every year, usually right after the marine layer finally burns off in June and owners notice the yard smells worse in the afternoon heat than it did all spring. Salt air off the coast doesn't help. It settles into the infill along with everything else a dog tracks in from the beach.

What We Actually Do in a La Jolla Backyard

We start with a power broom and power sweep to clear loose debris, sand, and the kind of eucalyptus leaf litter that collects under the trees near Mount Soledad. From there we apply a peroxide-based cleaning solution directly to the areas where the dog runs, lies down, or does its business, rather than spraying the whole yard evenly.

Pet-friendly infill goes down as a standard part of every visit. If a yard has a smell that doesn't let up after that, we bring the extractor in to pull it out at the base rather than covering it up. Not every yard needs that step. Most don't. We finish every job with a final inspection and go back over anything that still needs attention before we call it done.

How Long Does It Take?

A typical 500 square foot backyard runs about 1.5 to 2.5 hours from the power broom to the final inspection. Bigger lots near the La Jolla Country Club or the narrower side-yard runs common in older La Jolla Village properties can push toward the longer end, especially with two dogs in the house.

Coastal HOA Rules and Turf Upkeep

A lot of La Jolla properties sit inside an HOA or a coastal overlay zone, and boards here tend to flag matted or discolored turf faster than they flag much else, since it's visible from the street on tight lots. Regular cleaning is usually enough to keep a yard off that list.
