Can Fake Grass Be Cleaned?
Yes. Almost all fake grass that looks ruined is only loaded with urine salts, grit and mineral film sitting in the infill. Hot water extraction flushes that layer out and a power broom lifts the flattened blades. Replacement is only necessary when the backing has split or the base has failed.

We get called out to yards where the homeowner has already gotten an installation quote. They assume the turf is spent because it is gray, matted and smells.
Gray is almost never a fiber problem. Gray is film.
Hard water in the inland valleys leaves mineral residue across the blade faces, and it reads as faded from ten feet away. It comes off. The blades underneath are the same color they were the day they went in.

How do you clean fake grass properly?
The sequence is the same on every yard we service. High-pressure hot water down into the infill to break the salt bond, vacuum recovery to pull the slurry back out, then a power broom across the whole yard to stand the blades up.
What we do not do is leave soap in a base that never fully drains. And we do not run a straight jet at close range, which is how blades get shredded.
Depth is the whole argument. The buildup lives about a quarter inch down. A leaf blower moves what is on top, a hose moves it sideways, and neither one touches the layer that causes the smell.
The DIY attempts we see most
Weekly rinsing is the common one and it makes the yard worse over time. A Scripps Ranch customer went the other direction with a rented pressure washer and blew infill out of a 400 square foot section, which left the blades unsupported and permanently leaning.
Infill can be topped back up. Blades that have been cut by a narrow tip cannot.
How long does the fix take?
A standard 500 to 800 square foot backyard runs about 45 minutes. Two dogs and a year without service pushes it to roughly 90 minutes, because saturated infill gives up odor slowly and one pass leaves some behind.
