What Two Summers of Skipped Cleaning Looks Like Underneath
Turf left two summers without a deep clean holds urine salt and wind grit roughly a quarter inch down in the infill, under the blade line. A garden hose moves that layer sideways instead of lifting it. Hot water extraction flushes it and vacuums the slurry back out.

We pulled up to a house off Camino del Sur last month and could smell the backyard from the side gate. Two dogs. Roughly 700 square feet of turf that went in with the house and had never been cleaned.
From the patio door it looked fine. That is usually the trap.
The homeowner had been rinsing every Saturday for a year and could not understand why the yard still turned by early afternoon. Rinsing was the problem, not the fix. Every pass carried the salts a little further sideways and a little further down.
Why do inland yards like Del Sur hold odor longer?
Two local conditions stack on top of each other out here. Hard water leaves a chalky mineral film on the blades and in the top layer of infill, and Santa Ana wind drops fine grit into that same layer every fall.
Mix in a dog and the layer sets like a crust. Water stops moving through it. So the next rinse sits on the surface and evaporates in the August heat instead of draining out the base.
Coastal yards in Del Mar and Encinitas get a different version of this, where salt air does the crusting. Same depth, same stubbornness, same fix.
What actually came out of that yard
The recovery tank told the story. First pass came back gray-brown and gritty, which is mineral film and wind sand more than anything organic. Second pass came back darker and that is the pet load.
We ran the extraction slower on the two heaviest corners, the spots along the fence line where both dogs go. Those corners took as long as the rest of the yard combined.
How long does a neglected turf yard take to clean?
A standard San Diego backyard takes about 45 minutes with hot water extraction. A yard that has gone two summers with dogs on it runs closer to two hours, because saturated infill releases odor slowly and a single fast pass leaves half of it behind.
We planned for the second pass before we started. Telling somebody at minute 50 that their yard needs more time is a bad conversation, and it is avoidable if you look at the fence line corners first.
The power broom at the end is not cosmetic either. Blades that have been matted under weight for two summers hold the mat until something stands them back up.
Does the HOA notice turf that has gone this long?
In Del Sur the letters we hear about are almost always for street-facing yards, not backyards. Matted, gray, flattened turf reads as neglect from the sidewalk even when the odor problem is out back.
