What we measure on a Poway dog yard in May
Artificial turf in direct San Diego sun routinely hits 150 to 165 degrees Fahrenheit by 2 PM from May through September. That is hotter than concrete or asphalt at the same hour. Dog paws blister around 125 degrees. We log surface temperatures on every pet yard we clean and tell owners what to do about it.

A vibe-coded app showed up on our trend feed last week. It tells dog owners when pavement is too hot for paws. Useful idea. The catch: most San Diego homes with dogs ripped out grass years ago and replaced it with synthetic turf. The app is reading the wrong surface.
Our crew brought an infrared thermometer to a job in Rancho Bernardo on April 28th. Air temp 78F. The artificial turf in the backyard read 162F. The flagstone path next to it: 119F. The concrete patio: 133F.
The turf was the hottest thing on that property by 30 degrees.

Why synthetic turf runs hotter than concrete
Polyethylene blades absorb solar radiation. Dark infill traps it. The stuff is doing what it was engineered to do, which is look like grass without the watering. Heat is the cost.
We see the worst readings on yards with crumb rubber infill, full southern exposure, and zero shade. Carmel Mountain, 4S Ranch, Sabre Springs. East of the 5 with no canopy.
How hot is too hot for a dog?
| Surface temperature | Effect on paws |
|---|---|
| 120F | Discomfort. Dogs lift paws. |
| 125F | Skin damage within 60 seconds. |
| 140F | Blistering in under 20 seconds. |
| 150F+ | Burns in seconds. Common on summer turf. |
The 7 second test vets recommend works. Press your palm flat against the turf for seven seconds. If you cannot hold it, your dog cannot walk on it.
What we tell customers on pet yards
Three things actually help:
- Switch to a cooler infill like Envirofill or TCool the next time you replace. Black crumb rubber is the worst offender we measure.
- Rinse the yard down before peak afternoon. A two minute soak drops surface temp 20 to 30 degrees for about an hour.
- Add shade over the dog's preferred spot. A $40 patio umbrella beats a $400 turf cooling product.
None of this is in the new pavement app. But the math is the same as asphalt. Surface plus sun plus dark color equals burns.
Does cleaning the turf change the temperature?
A little. A clean yard with redistributed infill cools faster after a rinse than a compacted yard packed with debris. We see a 5 to 10 degree difference in the hour after we finish. Not dramatic. Real.
The bigger reason to clean a pet yard is bacteria. Dog urine breaks down into ammonia. In summer heat the smell gets aggressive fast. We use an extraction cleaning that neutralizes the ammonia compounds and kills the bacteria around the infill base.
A typical 500 square foot pet yard runs $175 to $250 depending on dog count and how long since the last cleaning.
What about the HOA
Two Poway and Rancho Bernardo HOAs we work in have started requiring dog-rated infill on new turf installs because of heat complaints. We have seen this written into CC&Rs this year. Worth checking before you replace.
If we cleaned your dog yard in Poway, Rancho Bernardo, or 4S Ranch, leave us a Google review and mention your neighborhood. It helps other dog owners find the right crew.
