How Often Should You Clean Artificial Turf?
Most artificial turf in San Diego needs a full cleaning every 6 to 12 months. Dog yards need quarterly service. High-shade yards in Rancho Bernardo or Poway can stretch to 18 months. Deodorizing and infill redistribution are usually required sooner than a full rinse, especially during warm months.
We have cleaned turf yards across Poway, Scripps Ranch, and Rancho Bernardo since 2019. The 6 to 12 month rule holds for about 70% of our customers. But it breaks in specific ways, and those exceptions are what most homeowners get wrong.
The Three Things That Change Your Schedule
Dogs. Shade. Infill type.
If you have two medium dogs using a 600 square foot yard, you are looking at quarterly cleaning to keep bacteria counts from climbing past the smell threshold. One small dog on a larger yard stretches that to twice a year. No dogs at all and full sun? Once a year is usually fine.

Why Shade Matters More Than People Think
Shaded yards dry slower. We cleaned a 4S Ranch backyard last month where the north side held moisture for 72 hours after a rinse. That is enough time for bacteria to climb and infill to mat. Full-sun yards drop to surface-dry in about 2 hours at 75 degrees. That moisture window is why shaded turf needs more frequent attention, not less.
What a Routine Clean Actually Does
A standard visit covers four things. Infill redistribution with a power broom. Surface rinse at 180 degrees. Enzyme deodorizer applied at a 1 to 10 dilution. Final low-pressure rinse to drive the enzyme into the backing.
Most 500 to 700 square foot yards take 45 to 75 minutes. Pricing runs $150 to $275 depending on access and debris.
How Often Do Dog Owners Need Service?
Dog yards need a sanitizing treatment every 90 days and a full deep clean every 6 months. Between visits, rinse high-traffic pee zones twice a week with water. Enzyme-based products work. Dish soap and vinegar do not pull uric acid out of the infill backing.
We pulled a sample from a Sabre Springs yard in January that had not been cleaned in 14 months. Bacteria count was 47 times higher than a 3-month-service yard two streets over. The owners did not notice the smell until a family dinner on the patio in July. By then it was in the infill backing and took two visits to clear.
Signs It Is Time
- Flat, matted fibers in traffic zones
- Infill pooled at low spots after rain
- Smell that returns within days of a hose rinse
- Visible dust when you walk on dry turf
- Pets avoiding certain areas
Seasonal Schedule We Actually Recommend
| Situation | Recommended Frequency | Typical Cost |
|---|---|---|
| No pets, full sun | Once yearly (spring) | $150 to $200 |
| One dog, mixed sun | Every 6 months | $175 to $250 |
| Multiple dogs | Quarterly | $135 to $195 per visit |
| Shaded, no pets | Every 9 to 12 months | $175 to $250 |
| HOA inspection prep | Annual, timed to review | $150 to $225 |
What San Diego Weather Does to the Schedule
Our dry fall pushes debris deep into infill. The May marine layer traps moisture. August heat drives odor up fast. We do not see the salt-corrosion issues that Oceanside installations deal with, but Poway and Rancho Bernardo yards get more wind-blown eucalyptus debris than coastal jobs.
If you only clean once a year, do it in March or early April. The infill is dry, debris has settled, and you get ahead of summer odor before it locks in.
When DIY Cleaning Is Enough
For a light touch-up between pro visits, a stiff nylon broom and a garden hose cover most of what you need. Skip the pressure washer. We have repaired fiber damage from homeowner pressure washing often enough to call it the most common self-inflicted turf problem.
