How do you clean artificial turf when you have dogs?
Pick up solids right away, rinse the area with plain water, and brush the blades upright so urine does not pool in the infill. A rinse only moves salts around, though. When odor returns by afternoon, the infill needs a cleaning solution worked in and loose debris cleared first.
That is the short version. Here is what we see on real yards.
What can you handle yourself between visits?
Daily habits matter more than any product. Solids come up fast, before they get stepped into the blades.
A quick rinse of the favorite spot helps too. Most dogs pick one corner, and that corner takes the damage.
A stiff broom, used against the lean of the blades, lifts matted fibers. It takes five minutes.
Why does the smell come back by afternoon?
Urine does not stay on the blade. It runs down into the infill, dries, and leaves salts behind. Heat wakes that odor up again, which is why a yard can smell fine at 8 a.m. and bad by 2 p.m. in a Poway summer.
Rinsing spreads those salts a few inches sideways. They settle right back into the sand.
Hose rinse or professional cleaning: what is the difference?
| Step | Hose rinse | Our visit |
|---|---|---|
| Loose debris | Pushed around | Cleared with a power broom and power sweep |
| Infill treatment | None | Peroxide-based cleaning solution on high-use areas |
| Infill refresh | None | Pet-friendly infill applied |
| Tough smells | Not addressed | Extractor, on those yards only |
| Final check | None | Inspection and touch-up pass |
What does a visit look like for a dog yard?
A 500 square foot backyard takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. We clean over 50 yards a month, and dog yards make up a large share of them.
We start with the power broom and power sweep. Then we apply the cleaning solution, focusing on the dog run and the corner by the gate.
Next comes pet-friendly infill. The extractor only comes out when the smell is tough, because not every yard needs it. We finish with an inspection and go back over anything that needs more attention.
How often should a dog yard be cleaned?
It depends on the number of dogs, the size of the yard, and the heat. Our guide on cleaning frequency for dog yards covers that in more detail.

If the smell is already back by afternoon, see our pet turf cleaning in Poway page or the services overview.
Dog owners near Espola Road and Carmel Mountain Ranch tell us the same thing. The turf looks fine and the yard still smells. That is an infill problem, not a blade problem.
