How to Make Fake Grass Look New Again

Restoring faded artificial turf takes three steps: power-brooming to lift matted fibers, enzyme treatment to break down organics, and a 180-degree steam rinse to reset color tone. A typical 500 square foot yard recovers 80 to 90 percent of its appearance in 90 minutes, costing $175 to $300 depending on age and pet exposure.

We get this call almost every week. A homeowner in Rancho Bernardo or Scripps Ranch walks out to the backyard and notices the turf does not look anything like it did when the installer left. The blades lay flat. The color has gone gray. There is a faint smell on hot days. The yard looks tired.

It is fixable. We have done it on jobs as old as 12 years.

Why Artificial Turf Looks Old Before It Is Old

Three things wear out a turf yard cosmetically. Foot traffic flattens the fibers. UV exposure dulls the color top layer. Infill migration leaves bald patches and uneven density. None of these mean the turf is at end of life. Most of our restoration jobs are on yards that still have 5 to 10 years of structural life left.

The Carmel Valley job we did last March is a good example. The yard was installed in 2017. The owner thought she was going to need a full replacement quoted at $11,000. We restored it for $285.

The Three-Step Restoration Process

Step one is mechanical. We run a power broom across the entire surface, working against the grain. This lifts matted fibers and pulls loose infill back to the surface. On heavily compacted yards we make two passes.

Step two is chemical. We apply an enzyme-based treatment that breaks down organic buildup at the base of the fibers. Pet waste, leaves, dust, sunscreen, and food spills all leave residue that the eye reads as color fade. The enzymes cut through it without damaging the polyurethane backing.

Step three is heat. We rinse the entire surface with 180 degree steam at moderate pressure, around 800 PSI. This sanitizes the surface, melts any remaining residue, and tightens the fibers as they cool. The visual difference happens at this stage.

What This Costs in San Diego

Pricing is based on square footage and condition. Here is what we typically charge.

Yard SizeLight RestorationHeavy Restoration
Under 500 sq ft$150 to $200$200 to $275
500 to 1,000 sq ft$200 to $300$275 to $400
1,000 to 2,000 sq ft$300 to $475$400 to $650

Light restoration covers yards under 5 years old with no pet contamination. Heavy restoration covers yards over 7 years old or yards with regular dog use.

What You Cannot Fix

If the fibers are split at the tips or the backing has separated from the seams, restoration will not bring it back. We have walked yards where the homeowner asked for a quote and we recommended replacement instead. Fiber splitting usually shows up around year 12 to 14 on residential installs in San Diego sun. Seam separation is an installation issue, not a maintenance issue.

Can You DIY It

You can. The results will be partial. A stiff push broom and a garden hose will lift some fibers and remove surface dust. That is about 30 percent of what the full process delivers. The enzyme treatment and the steam rinse are what most homeowners cannot replicate without commercial equipment. We have seen homeowners try with pressure washers and damage the backing. The Scripps Ranch story is documented in our DIY damage post.

If you want to try the broom-and-hose approach first, do that in spring before the heat sets in. Then call us for the deep clean if it does not bring back the look you want.

Schedule a Restoration Visit

We service Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Escondido, Carmel Valley, Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, and most of San Diego County. Most quotes are same-day. Restoration jobs typically book within a week. Our services page has the full process, and our Poway service area page covers local availability and HOA work.

If we restore your turf and you are happy with the result, leave us a Google review and mention your neighborhood and the type of work we did. That helps other San Diego homeowners find us.
