Should you jet wash fake grass?
No. Jet washing artificial turf at standard pressure-washer PSI strips the infill, frays the blades, and pulls the seams apart. We use 180-degree low-pressure steam and enzyme rinses instead. A 3,000 PSI power washer will damage a turf yard within seconds, and replacing the infill alone costs more than a professional cleaning.

A homeowner in Scripps Ranch called us last March. She had rented a 3,200 PSI gas pressure washer from a big-box store and wanted to clean her 850 square foot backyard before her son's birthday party.
She made it about twenty seconds into the first pass.
The green silica infill came up in a wave. The turf blades laid flat like wet hair. The seam down the middle of the yard pulled open about three inches. By the time we got there the next afternoon she had already ordered fresh infill and was staring at a $1,400 repair bill.
Why does a jet wash destroy artificial turf?
Synthetic turf is held in place by two things: nailed perimeter edges and the weight of the infill. The infill is sand, rubber crumb, or a mix, and it sits between the blades to hold them upright and protect the backing.
A pressure washer at 2,500 to 4,000 PSI pushes water through that infill faster than the turf can hold onto it. You blow out the sand. You lift the blades from their base. And on a coastal yard like the ones we clean in Encinitas, where infill is partially crusted from salt air, a jet wash will rip up the top quarter inch of fibers right along with it.

What pressure is safe for artificial grass?
We use a heated extraction system that runs at roughly 250 to 500 PSI with water at 180 degrees. The temperature, not the pressure, does most of the cleaning. Bacteria and pet waste protein break down at heat. The low pressure means the infill stays where it belongs.
A garden hose at the spigot runs around 40 to 60 PSI. That is fine for a rinse. Anything above 1,000 PSI starts moving infill. Above 1,500 you are into damage territory on most residential turf systems.
Jet wash vs steam extraction
| Method | Typical PSI | Infill loss | Blade damage | Bacteria removal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pressure washer | 2,500-4,000 | Severe | Yes | Surface only |
| Steam extraction | 250-500 | None | No | 99 percent plus |
| Garden hose rinse | 40-60 | None | No | Minimal |
What about a soft-wash or wide-tip nozzle?
Some pressure washers have adjustable tips and detergent injection. A 40-degree wide tip held two to three feet away can be safe for a light surface rinse. But that is not what most homeowners actually do.
What we see in Rancho Bernardo and 4S Ranch is people borrowing a neighbor's gas-powered unit and going at it with the same red nozzle they use on the driveway. That is the version that ruins yards.

What does a damaged yard cost to fix?
Infill replacement on a 500 square foot yard runs about $300 to $600 in materials alone. If the blades are matted permanently or the seams have separated, you are looking at partial replacement of the turf itself, which on jobs we see across San Diego sits between $8 and $14 per square foot installed.
A professional cleaning on that same yard, done right, costs $150 to $250. Do the math.
So how should you actually clean fake grass at home?
For homeowners doing it themselves: rake with a stiff bristle broom first, scoop solids, rinse with a regular garden hose, and apply an enzyme-based pet odor neutralizer. No bleach. No vinegar at full strength. No pressure washer.
For yards with dogs, heavy debris, or anything older than two years, hire someone. Our breakdown of DIY vs professional turf cleaning covers the full comparison, and the Scripps Ranch yard we mentioned has the full photo set. If we have cleaned your yard in Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Mountain, or anywhere else in the county, a Google review mentioning your neighborhood and the service goes a long way.
