What Two Years Without Cleaning Actually Looks Like
We groomed first. That alone pulled out fourteen pounds of debris.
Mostly dried jacaranda blooms from the neighbor's tree. Sand from the Santa Anas. Compacted dog hair you could pull out in mats. Three dried lemons.
The infill underneath was the real story. It had gone from light tan to a wet gray-black. That color shift means urine has bonded with the silica and dried into a crust. No amount of garden-hose rinsing pulls that out.
How We Clean Synthetic Turf at This Level of Buildup
We ran two passes. First pass: dry vacuum extraction with a power broom set to lift fibers without scrubbing the backing.
Second pass: 180F hot-water extraction with an enzyme-based deodorizer. We hold the wand at 6 to 8 PSI on coastal-grade turf. Anything higher than 12 PSI shreds the fiber tips. A Scripps Ranch customer learned that the hard way last fall with a rented power washer.
Then we top up the infill. This yard needed 40 lbs of fresh antimicrobial infill to replace what we extracted.
How Long Does Synthetic Turf Last in San Diego?
Manufacturer warranties say 15 to 20 years. Our experience across 1,400+ yards: that holds true only if you clean it. The Rancho Bernardo yard we worked on was rated for 18 years. Without intervention, it would have lost bounce and color inside another two seasons.
