How Much Does It Cost to Get Turf Cleaned?

Professional turf cleaning in San Diego typically costs $150 to $350 for a standard residential yard between 300 and 800 square feet. Price depends on yard size, number of pets, infill condition, and how long since the last cleaning. Most homeowners pay around $200 for a one-time deep clean.

We get this question on almost every call. And the honest answer is always "it depends" -- but we can break it down in a way that makes sense because we're the ones writing the quotes.

What Drives the Price Up or Down?

Yard size is the biggest factor. A 200 square foot dog run off Espola Road in Poway takes us about 30 minutes. A 900 square foot backyard in Rancho Bernardo takes closer to 90 minutes. More square footage means more steam passes, more enzyme treatment, and more infill work.

Pets are the second factor. One small dog? Quick job. Three large dogs using the same 400 square foot patch? The infill is going to be heavily compacted and saturated with urine deep into the base layer. That takes extra decompaction passes and heavier enzyme application.

Then there's time since last cleaning. A yard on a quarterly maintenance schedule might run $150. That same yard left untouched for two years could be $300+ because we're dealing with hardened organic buildup that resists a single steam pass.

How Often Does Turf Need to Be Cleaned?

For yards with pets, we recommend every 3 months. Without pets, once or twice a year keeps things in good shape.

We have a turf protection membership that drops the per-visit cost by scheduling recurring cleanings. Most of our Poway and Rancho Bernardo customers are on quarterly plans because the cost per visit is lower than booking one-offs.

San Diego's climate works against you here. We don't get enough rain to flush the turf naturally, and the warm temperatures accelerate bacterial growth in the infill. A yard in Tierrasanta that bakes in full sun all afternoon will smell worse faster than a shaded yard in Del Mar.

What's Included in a Professional Cleaning?

Every job we do follows the same process:

  1. Mechanical brush pass to decompact the infill and lift matted fibers
  2. 180-degree steam treatment across the full surface -- this kills 99.2% of bacteria on contact
  3. Enzyme-based deodorizer application that breaks down urine proteins at the molecular level
  4. Final grooming pass to reset fiber direction and redistribute infill evenly

We use about 35 PSI on the steam wand. Higher pressure can damage cheaper turf backing, so we adjust based on the turf brand and age. We've seen some Poway yards with builder-grade turf from 2015 that can't handle aggressive treatment.

DIY vs Professional: Is It Worth Paying?

A garden hose and dish soap will remove surface debris. It won't touch the bacteria living in the infill layer 2-3 inches below the surface. That's where the smell lives.

We wrote a full breakdown of DIY vs professional turf cleaning if you want the details. Short version: hosing your turf down buys you a day or two. Steam and enzyme treatment lasts months.
