What a Professional Turf Cleaning Actually Includes
Professional turf cleaning in San Diego takes 2 to 4 hours. We extract debris mechanically, apply a peroxide-based cleaner to break down uric acid, rinse at low pressure and professional-grade, then redistribute infill and finish with a pet-safe sanitizing pass. A real service lifts the blades. A hose-down pushes contaminants deeper.

Last Tuesday we pulled into a Tierrasanta cul-de-sac off Santo Road. The yard was 580 square feet of pet turf installed over a packed crushed-rock base. Two dogs. Three years of use. No deep clean since install.
The owner asked the same question we hear every week. What does professional turf cleaning actually mean? Most folks assume it is a fancy rinse.
It isn't.
The First 20 Minutes: Survey and Setup
We walked the yard. Looked for matted blades, infill displacement, drainage spots, and pet zones. The northeast corner had the heaviest traffic and the worst smell, which lined up with where their golden retriever spends her afternoons.
We measured infill depth at six points. It varied from 0.25 inches in the high-traffic corner to 0.6 inches at the perimeter. That kind of displacement tells you how the dogs move and where the infill needs to be redistributed before you rinse anything.

How We Actually Clean the Turf
Our process for this yard ran four steps:
- Mechanical debris extraction. Power broom in two directions, pulling out matted dog hair, leaves, and the bottle caps that end up in every yard.
- Peroxide application. Peroxide-based cleaner at roughly 4 ounces per 100 square feet. Twelve minute dwell. The peroxide break down uric acid molecules instead of just masking the smell.
- professional rinse at professional-grade. Hot water through a low-angle wand. The heat is what kills bacteria. Cold water alone will not do it.
- Infill redistribution and sanitizing finish. Fresh silica infill raked into the worn zones, then a final pet-safe sanitizing rinse.
How Does Professional Turf Cleaning Compare to DIY?
| Factor | DIY Hose-Down | Professional Service |
|---|---|---|
| Water temperature | About 70 degrees | low-pressures |
| Pressure | 40 to 60 PSI | professional-grade controlled |
| Deodorizer | Vinegar or dish soap | Peroxide based, dissolves uric acid |
| Infill management | None | Measured and redistributed |
| Time on yard | 30 minutes | 2 to 4 hours |
How Much Does Professional Turf Cleaning Cost in San Diego?
Pricing depends on square footage, pet load, and how compacted the infill is. We send a written quote after seeing the yard or a few clear photos, not a flat rate over the phone.
The Tierrasanta job covered 580 square feet with heavy pet usage. A small patio in La Jolla takes far less time than a large Rancho Bernardo backyard with three dogs, and the quote reflects that.
Commercial properties and HOA common areas are quoted differently because of repeat scheduling and access logistics.
When to Hire a Pro Instead of Doing It Yourself
Hose it yourself if the yard is under 200 square feet, has no pets, and gets a quick rinse every couple of weeks. Call us if the turf is over a year old, you have dogs, or you have started noticing a smell after rain.
The rain test is the simple one. If your yard smells worse after a storm, the bacteria has worked its way under the blades and into the infill. A surface rinse will not pull it back out.
We service Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Tierrasanta, San Diego, and the rest of the county. If we have cleaned your turf in your neighborhood, we would love to hear about it on Google. Mention the service and the area you live in so future customers can find the review that matches their situation.
