What Does a Professional Turf Cleaning Service Actually Do?

A professional turf cleaning service pre-inspects your synthetic grass, removes surface debris with a power broom, applies 180-degree steam treatment through the infill layer at 3,000 PSI, and finishes with an enzyme-based deodorizer that breaks down uric acid crystals. A typical 500 sq ft San Diego yard takes 45 minutes and costs $150 to $225.

We hear this question on almost every first call. People want to know what happens between the time our truck pulls up and the time we leave. Fair enough. Here is the full breakdown from a job we ran last week on a 600 sq ft backyard in Sabre Springs.

Step 1: Pre-Inspection and Surface Clear

We walk the yard before touching any equipment. We are looking for seam separation, drainage issues, matted infill, and pet waste concentration zones. In Sabre Springs and Rancho Bernardo, the south-facing yards catch the worst sun damage. The fibers flatten and trap more debris along fence lines where shade meets direct heat.

Surface clearing takes five minutes. We use a stiff-bristle power broom to pull up leaves, hair, and loose waste. Not a leaf blower. Blowers just push debris into the infill.

Step 2: Steam Treatment at 180 Degrees

This is the core of the service. Our truck-mounted system pushes 180-degree water through the turf at 3,000 PSI. That temperature kills bacteria and breaks apart the compacted layer of dust, pollen, and pet waste that builds up between infill granules.

We work in overlapping passes, roughly 18 inches wide. A 500 sq ft yard takes 20 to 25 passes. We adjust pressure based on infill type. Silica sand handles 3,000 PSI without displacement. Crumb rubber needs 2,200 PSI or lower because the granules are lighter and blow out of position at higher pressure.

Temperature matters more than pressure. At 140 degrees, bacterial kill rates drop below 90%. At 180 degrees, we consistently measure 99% or higher reduction on post-treatment swabs.

Step 3: Enzyme Rinse and Deodorizing

After steaming, we apply an enzyme-based deodorizer across the full yard. The enzymes break down uric acid crystals, which are the actual source of pet urine odor. Masking sprays cover the smell for a day. Enzymes eliminate the molecule causing it.

We use a biodegradable formula that is safe for storm drains, pets, and kids. No bleach. No ammonia. San Diego's proximity to protected waterways and the ocean means we take runoff seriously. Our products are certified safe for aquatic ecosystems.

The enzyme soak sits for 10 to 15 minutes, then we do a final rinse and brush. Total time on a 600 sq ft yard: about 50 minutes.

How Much Does a Turf Cleaning Service Cost?

For a one-time deep clean in the San Diego area:

  • Under 400 sq ft: $110 to $175
  • 400 to 700 sq ft: $150 to $225
  • 700 to 1,000 sq ft: $200 to $275
  • Above 1,000 sq ft: $250 to $325

Monthly maintenance plans drop per-visit pricing by 25% to 35%. Our most popular plan covers monthly visits at $129 for a standard backyard in Poway, Scripps Ranch, or 4S Ranch.

What We Find That Homeowners Never See

The infill layer is where problems hide. On a recent job in Carmel Mountain, we pulled the turf back at a seam and found a quarter-inch layer of black sludge between the infill and the drainage mat. The homeowner had been hosing the surface weekly. The surface looked fine. The infill was a bacterial colony.

This is common on yards older than three years that have never had a professional service. The top looks clean. Two inches down, organic matter is decomposing in standing moisture.

If your artificial grass smells worse on hot days, that is the infill telling you something. Heat accelerates bacterial activity in the trapped organic layer. A surface rinse will not reach it. Steam at 180 degrees will.

We service Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch, 4S Ranch, Carmel Mountain, Sabre Springs, Del Sur, Penasquitos, and the rest of San Diego County. If you want to see what your turf cleaning service visit would look like, reach out for a free quote.
