Where the dust in a San Diego house actually starts
Most of the fine dust that ends up inside a San Diego house starts outside. In a turf yard it collects in the infill about a quarter inch under the blade line, then rides indoors on shoes and paws. Hot water extraction flushes that layer loose and vacuums the slurry back off the yard.
CNET ran a piece this week asking whether air purifiers are the answer, given that the country has no Clean Indoor Air Act. Fair question. But a purifier is the last stop in a chain that starts at the back door.
We see the front end of that chain. A homeowner in Scripps Ranch called us in July because she was swapping HVAC filters every six weeks and blaming the road work down the street. Two dogs, roughly 900 square feet of turf, no extraction in two years. When we opened the infill with the wand, the water came back gray on the first pass.
What is actually sitting in the infill?
Santa Ana wind drops a fine grit across the inland yards from Carmel Mountain up through Poway. It does not stay on the surface. It works down past the blades and packs into the infill, which is why a blower moves the leaves and leaves the dust behind. Then add the rest of it. Dander, pollen, dried urine salts, and the powder that older infill sheds as it breaks down.

Does cleaning turf change what gets tracked inside?
It changes what is available to track. A rinse pushes the fine material sideways and down. Extraction pulls it off the property, because the vacuum recovers the slurry instead of leaving it to dry back into the same infill.
That Scripps Ranch yard took about 90 minutes instead of the 45 a standard backyard runs, because a single pass would not lift two years of packed material. The second pass came back noticeably lighter. Her words about the filters came a month later, not from us.
How often does an inland yard need it?
Once or twice a year for most yards. Shorter cycle for a two dog yard, and shorter again for anything downwind of open ground during Santa Ana season, which in Poway runs hard through the fall.
