How long does artificial turf cleaning take?
Most San Diego backyards take about 45 minutes with hot water extraction. Side yards under 400 square feet finish faster. A two dog yard that has gone a year without service can run twice that, because the infill holds odor and a single pass will not pull it out.
A homeowner off Twin Peaks Road asked if we could be gone before her kids got back from camp. Fair ask. We were loaded up in 50 minutes, and most of the extra time went to a second pass along the fence line where the dog had a favorite corner.
Time on site comes down to three things. Square footage, pet load, and how long since the last extraction.
What makes one turf yard take twice as long as another?
Pet load, mostly. Urine salts do not sit on top of the blades. They wick down and bind to the sand infill, usually a quarter inch to a half inch below the blade line.
One pass lifts what is near the surface. A yard that has gone two summers gets a slower second pass at reduced travel speed, and that is where the extra 40 minutes goes.
Sun damage adds time too. Blades that have laid flat under July heat need a longer power broom stage before they stand up again.

Does a bigger yard always take longer?
No. A 900 square foot lawn with no dogs on a yearly schedule often goes quicker than a 300 square foot dog run that has never been extracted. Square footage sets the floor. Buildup sets the ceiling.
Layout matters more than most people expect. Turf broken up by planters, stepping stones and a pool coping means constant repositioning, and that adds 15 minutes to a yard that would otherwise be a straight run.
What happens during a turf cleaning visit?
The sequence is the same on every job.
- Walk the yard, clear leaf litter and surface debris, and flag the corners the dogs use.
- Run high pressure hot water down through the infill to break the salt and mineral bond.
- Vacuum the slurry back out so it leaves the property instead of soaking into the base rock.
- Power broom the blades upright, then check the pet corners and repeat if the odor is still there.
That last step is the one people skip when they do it themselves. Pulling material up and then leaving it to drain back down through the same infill is not cleaning.
How long before the turf is usable again?
Walk dry is usually 30 to 60 minutes in summer heat. A shaded north facing side yard in December can take most of an afternoon. Dogs can go back out as soon as it is dry to the touch.
