When Should You Clean Artificial Turf in San Diego?

San Diego's mild winters and hot summers create a specific turf maintenance rhythm. Clean professionally in early spring (March-April) and late summer (September). Rinse weekly during June through September when surface temps hit 150F+. Pet owners need quarterly service year-round. Skip December only if you have no pets and light foot traffic.

We get this question constantly. And the honest answer is that San Diego turf maintenance looks nothing like what the manufacturer brochure tells you. Those guidelines assume moderate climates and no pets. San Diego has 300+ days of sunshine, eight months of essentially zero rain, and most of our clients have dogs. Different rules apply.

Spring (March-May): The Deep Clean Window

This is the single most important cleaning of the year. Winter in San Diego is mild, but we still get those stretches of cool, damp weather in January and February. Moisture sits on north-facing turf for weeks. Mold spores activate. And all the organic debris that blew onto the turf during Santa Ana season is now decomposing in the infill.

March is when we schedule the most deep cleans across Poway, 4S Ranch, and Rancho Bernardo. A spring deep clean runs about $179-$249 for a standard 500-700 sq ft yard. We steam treat at 180F, extract compacted infill debris, and apply enzyme treatment to break down any pet waste residue from winter.

Spring is also the best time to check for infill displacement. Grab a handful of infill near the edges and compare it to the center. If the edges feel thin or the backing is visible, you need a top-up before summer heat makes the problem worse.

Summer (June-August): Damage Control Season

San Diego summers are where turf takes a beating. Surface temperatures on artificial grass regularly hit 150-170F by midday. We measured 168F on a black crumb rubber infill yard in Scripps Ranch last July. That is hot enough to cause second-degree burns on bare feet.

Three things to do weekly in summer:

  1. Hose down the turf in the morning before it heats up. A 10-minute rinse drops surface temp by 30-40F for a few hours.
  2. Pick up pet waste immediately - not hours later. In 100F heat, bacteria doubles every 20 minutes.
  3. Check the drainage. If water pools for more than 5 minutes after rinsing, your infill is compacted and needs professional attention.

Professional cleaning in summer focuses on bacterial control. We recommend a mid-summer treatment (July or August) for any yard with pets. Cost is the same as a standard visit: $149-$199.

Fall (September-November): Post-Summer Recovery

September is when we assess summer damage. After three months of intense UV and heat, turf fibers can lose their bounce. We power-brush every yard we service in fall to re-lift the blades. This alone makes a dramatic visual difference.

Fall is also Santa Ana season. Those hot dry winds blow dust, pollen, and debris onto turf faster than any other time of year. Homes in exposed areas like Carmel Mountain and Sabre Springs get hit especially hard. A fall cleaning clears all that material before it gets ground into the infill over winter.

We typically pair the fall cleaning with a light enzyme treatment. Think of it as closing out the heavy-use season before things slow down.

Winter (December-February): The Easy Months

San Diego winters are mild enough that turf maintenance drops to its lowest level. If you have no pets, you can skip professional cleaning entirely from December through February. Just brush off leaves and rinse after the occasional rain to prevent standing water.

Pet owners are different. Your dogs do not take winter off. We still recommend at least one professional cleaning during winter, usually in February to bridge the gap before the spring deep clean. Bacterial growth slows in cooler temps but does not stop.

Annual Maintenance Cost by Household Type

HouseholdRecommended Visits/YearAnnual Cost Range
No pets, light use2 (spring + fall)$298-$498
1 pet, moderate use3-4 (quarterly)$447-$796
2+ pets, heavy use4-6 (every 8-10 weeks)$596-$1,194
Membership (any pet count)4 (quarterly, discounted)$396-$596

Our membership clients save 15-20% versus booking individual visits. And they get priority scheduling, which matters in spring when our calendar fills up by mid-March.

The One Rule for San Diego Turf

Do not let a full summer pass without at least one professional cleaning. That single visit between June and September prevents 80% of the long-term problems we see: odor buildup, infill degradation, backing damage, and drainage failure. Everything else is optimization. But that summer clean is non-negotiable.
