What Should a Turf Cleaning Company Actually Do?
A professional turf cleaning company should use steam treatment at 180 degrees or higher, apply enzyme-based deodorizers that break down organic waste at the molecular level, and groom infill back to manufacturer specs. A basic hose-down or vinegar spray does not qualify as professional turf cleaning and will not eliminate bacteria below the surface layer.
About once a week, we show up at a yard in Poway or Rancho Bernardo where another company already "cleaned" the turf. The homeowner called us because it still smells. Every time, the reason is the same -- the previous crew sprayed the surface and left.
Surface spraying treats about 10% of the problem. The other 90% lives in the infill.
How Do You Tell If a Turf Cleaning Company Does Real Work?
Three questions. That's all it takes.
1. What temperature is your steam? Ours runs at 180-200 degrees Fahrenheit. That temperature kills 99.2% of bacteria in the infill layer. Companies using pressure washers or garden hoses can't hit those numbers. Cold water moves debris around. It doesn't sterilize.
2. What products do you use? We use plant-based enzyme cleaners that break down uric acid crystals -- the compound in dog urine that causes persistent odor. Bleach and vinegar mask smell temporarily but damage turf fibers and kill beneficial microbes in the infill. If a company can't name their product, that's a red flag.
3. Do you groom the infill? Infill compresses over time, especially in high-traffic areas. A 500 sq ft dog run in 4S Ranch we cleaned last month had lost about 40% of its infill depth from compression alone. We use power brooms to redistribute and lift infill after every cleaning. Most budget companies skip this step entirely.
What Does a Turf Cleaning Company Charge in San Diego?
Our residential rates for San Diego County:
| Yard Size | Standard Clean | Deep Clean (heavy pet use) |
|---|---|---|
| Under 300 sq ft | $125-150 | $150-175 |
| 300-600 sq ft | $150-200 | $200-250 |
| 600-1,000 sq ft | $200-250 | $250-300 |
| Over 1,000 sq ft | Custom quote | Custom quote |
Companies charging under $100 for a full yard are cutting corners somewhere. Either they're skipping steam, skipping enzyme treatment, or spending 15 minutes on a job that should take 45-60.
Why Does the Company You Pick Matter for Turf Lifespan?
Artificial turf installed correctly in San Diego should last 15-20 years. We've seen neglected yards need full replacement at year 8. And we've seen well-maintained turf at a home on Midland Road in Poway that's going on 16 years and still drains properly.
The difference is maintenance quality, not maintenance frequency. A thorough cleaning every 3 months beats a surface spray every month.
What About Turf Cleaning Companies That Offer Monthly Subscriptions?
We run a membership program ourselves. Quarterly cleaning is the right cadence for most San Diego yards with one or two dogs. Monthly is overkill unless you have three or more large dogs or a commercial dog facility.
Some companies push monthly plans because recurring revenue is good for them. But turf needs time between cleanings for the enzyme treatments to fully break down organic material. Cleaning too frequently can actually flush out enzymes before they finish working.
We tell our Scripps Ranch and Carmel Mountain customers the same thing -- save your money, clean quarterly, and your turf will outlast the warranty.
Red Flags When Hiring a Turf Cleaning Company
No before-and-after photos of local jobs. Stock photos on the website. Can't tell you the temperature of their equipment. Quotes over the phone without seeing the yard. Uses bleach or chemical deodorizers instead of enzyme treatments.
We've been cleaning turf across San Diego County -- Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Escondido, Mira Mesa, and down through Clairemont and University City. Every job gets documented. Every yard gets measured. We know what 500 sq ft of compressed infill looks like at month 6 versus month 12 because we track it.
That's the kind of detail that separates a turf cleaning company from a guy with a hose. Get a free quote and we'll show you exactly what we'd do on your yard.
