What Happens If You Never Clean Artificial Turf?

Uncleaned artificial turf develops dangerous bacterial levels within 6-12 months, especially with pet use. Ammonia from urine crystallizes in the infill, mold grows at the backing layer, and the turf fibers mat down permanently. After 2-3 years without cleaning, most turf needs partial infill replacement costing $500-$1,500 on top of the cleaning bill.

Last November we got a call from a homeowner in Rancho Bernardo. She had 800 sq ft of artificial turf installed in 2021 and never had it professionally cleaned. Not once. Her two golden retrievers used it daily.

The smell hit us from the side gate.

When we tested the infill with our ATP meter, the bacterial count was off the charts: 92,000 CFU per square inch. For reference, a toilet seat averages around 1,000 CFU. Her kids had been playing on this surface.

The First Year: Invisible Damage

For the first 12 months, neglected turf looks fine. That is the trap. Underneath the blades, urine is soaking into the silica sand or crumb rubber infill and breaking down into ammonia salts. You will not smell it much during cooler months. But the chemistry is working.

By month 8-10 with regular pet use, the infill pH shifts acidic enough to start degrading the turf backing. We have pulled samples from yards in Poway where the backing felt brittle, almost like dried paper. That is permanent damage. No cleaning fixes compromised backing material.

Year Two: The Smell Shows Up

Once San Diego summer hits, surface temperatures on untreated turf can reach 150-170F. That heat activates the ammonia compounds trapped in the infill. The smell becomes noticeable from inside the house with windows closed.

We also start seeing mold colonies at this stage, especially on yards with poor drainage or heavy shade. A 4S Ranch yard we serviced last year had visible black mold growing along the north-facing fence line where the turf stays damp through January and February.

Bacterial Growth Timeline on Uncleaned Turf

TimeframeBacterial Level (CFU/sq in)What You Notice
0-6 months1,000-5,000Nothing visible, slight warmth odor in summer
6-12 months5,000-20,000Faint urine smell on hot days, some fiber matting
1-2 years20,000-50,000Persistent odor, visible discoloration, infill compaction
2-4 years50,000-100,000+Strong ammonia, mold growth, backing degradation, drainage issues

Year Three and Beyond: Expensive Territory

After 2-3 years of zero maintenance with pets, we are usually looking at a two-visit job. The first visit is a heavy extraction and steam treatment at 180F. The second visit, a week later, is an enzyme treatment and infill top-up.

Cost for that kind of restoration on a 600 sq ft yard: $400-$600. And that does not include infill replacement if the existing material is too contaminated to salvage. New silica sand infill runs about $1-$2 per square foot installed. So a full restoration on an 800 sq ft yard can hit $1,500 easily.

Compare that to regular quarterly cleaning at $149-$199 per visit. The math is not complicated.

Can Neglected Turf Be Saved?

Usually, yes. We have restored yards that were 3-4 years neglected. But there are limits. If the backing is delaminating or the drainage layer underneath has clogged with decomposed infill, you are looking at a partial or full replacement. We have had to tell maybe 5-6 homeowners in the past year that their turf was beyond saving.

The Rancho Bernardo job we mentioned above? We got it back to under 500 CFU per square inch after two treatments. Total cost was $475 for both visits. She is on our quarterly membership now.

The Minimum Maintenance Schedule

If you have pets, clean your turf professionally every 8-12 weeks. No pets? You can stretch it to every 4-6 months, but an annual deep clean at minimum keeps the infill in good shape and prevents drainage problems.

Between professional cleanings, rinse the turf with a hose once a week and pick up solid waste daily. That alone cuts bacterial buildup by about 40% between visits.

We service Poway, Scripps Ranch, 4S Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, and all of San Diego County. If your turf has not been cleaned in over a year, get in touch and we will give you an honest assessment of what it needs.
