How do you clean dog run turf?
Cleaning a dog run on artificial turf starts with clearing loose debris, then working a peroxide-based cleaning solution into the urine-soaked zones along the fence line and gate. We follow with pet-friendly infill, and run the extractor only when the smell is tough. A 500 sq ft yard takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

A dog run is not a normal backyard. One narrow strip takes all of the traffic.
Dogs trot the same path every day, usually hugging the fence and stopping at the gate. That strip takes most of the urine, and it is where we find matted blades and a smell that a hose rinse does not touch.
Why does the smell stay in one strip?
Urine runs down the blade and into the infill, then sits there. Rinsing pushes it sideways. It does not pull it out of the base.
In Poway yards off Espola Road, and in 4S Ranch yards backing the open space near Dove Canyon Road, we see the same pattern. The odor comes back on a warm afternoon, because heat wakes up whatever stayed in the infill.

What order do we work in?
Order matters more than any single product. Here are our five steps on a dog run:
- Remove loose debris with a power broom and power sweep, which also lifts matted blades.
- Apply the peroxide-based cleaning solution to the turf surface, focusing on the fence line, gate and the dog's usual path.
- Apply pet-friendly infill.
- Run the extractor, only if the yard has a tough smell.
- Do a final inspection and address anything that needs more attention.
Step four is conditional. Most light-use runs do not need it.
What does a hose or store-bought spray leave behind?
| Method | Reaches the infill? | Lifts matted blades? |
|---|---|---|
| Garden hose rinse | No, moves surface dirt | No |
| Deodorizer spray | Sits mostly on top | No |
| Power broom and cleaning solution | Yes, worked into the problem areas | Yes |

How often should a dog run be cleaned?
It depends on the number of dogs and how small the run is. A single dog on a large yard is a different job from three dogs on a side strip.
If you have a run that smells again within a day of rinsing, that is the sign the infill needs work. We clean over 50 yards a month across San Diego County, and dog runs are a regular part of that. See our pet turf cleaning in Poway page or contact us to book.
If we cleaned your dog yard, tell us in a Google review which neighborhood you are in and what the run looked like before.
