Turf Cleaning in Point Loma

Salt is the whole story on this peninsula. Marine air rolls in off the water past Sunset Cliffs and settles on everything, and on turf it binds with the silica infill into a gritty crust that sits below the blade line.

You cannot feel it from standing height. Push your fingers down into the sand near a fence line off Catalina Boulevard and it comes up chalky.

That crust is why coastal yards stop draining before inland yards of the same age. Water hits the compacted layer and sheets sideways instead of going down through the perforations in the backing.

Why does coastal turf in Point Loma get crusty?

Salt in the marine layer settles into the infill and hardens as the sun dries it, cycle after cycle. The sand grains bind together into a shell that blocks drainage and holds odor. A hose spreads the salt around. Extraction is what carries it off the yard.

We see the heaviest buildup on the ocean side of the ridge, where the wind comes over the top of the hill without anything to break it. Yards closer to Liberty Station and Rosecrans Street sit more protected and load slower.

Older Point Loma lots also tend to be small, which concentrates traffic. A 300 square foot patch between a garage and a fence takes the same daily wear a yard three times that size would spread out.

A job near Sunset Cliffs that took two passes

A homeowner called about a flat, dull patch under a patio cover. Two years, no service, one dog, and a pool about eight feet off the turf edge.

One extraction pass pulled most of the salt. It did not touch the oil film. We went back over that ten foot band a second time at a slower rate so the hot water had contact time, then power broomed the whole yard.

The blades stood up. The dull band matched the rest of the turf again.

How long does turf cleaning take in Point Loma?

Most Point Loma backyards take about 45 minutes with hot water extraction. A coastal yard that has gone two summers without service usually needs a slower second pass, because one pass will not lift what has hardened that deep into the infill.
