How do you clean artificial turf at home?
To clean artificial turf at home, remove loose debris first with a stiff broom or leaf blower, then rinse and treat stained or smelly spots with a pet-safe cleaner, and let the turf dry. Heavy pet odor and packed infill usually need a crew. A 500 sq ft backyard takes our crew about 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
Most of the yards we clean around Poway do not need anything exotic. They need the debris out, the surface treated, and the infill kept loose.

What can you safely do yourself?
Start dry. Wet debris mats down and gets pushed into the infill, so clear the leaves, dirt and pet solids before any water touches the turf.
A stiff-bristle broom works against the grain of the blades. A leaf blower handles the sticky stuff along fence lines and under patio covers.
- Pick up solids and sweep or blow the loose debris off the surface.
- Brush the blades against the lean to stand them back up.
- Spot treat stains and urine areas with a pet-safe cleaner, working it in lightly.
- Rinse and let the turf dry fully before anyone walks on it.
That routine keeps a lightly used yard presentable between professional visits.
What does a DIY clean miss?
Plenty. The smell lives below the blades, in the infill, and a rinse from the surface does not reach it.
| Problem | Home routine | Crew visit |
|---|---|---|
| Loose leaves and dust | Works well | Power broom and power sweep |
| Light surface stains | Often works | Peroxide-based solution on high-use and problem areas |
| Matted traffic lanes | Partial | Power broom lifts the blades back up |
| Odor that returns by afternoon | Rarely fixes it | Extractor, used only on yards with tough smells |
That last row matters. We do not run the extractor on every yard. A yard with light use does not need it, and we say so.
Why do inland Poway yards get dirty so fast?
Santa Ana season is the main reason. Dust and fine grit come off the hills around Espola Road and Twin Peaks and settle into the infill along fence lines and patio edges.
We see it every fall. The turf looks faded, but it is coated.
Dog yards add another layer. Two or more dogs usually means a shorter cleaning cycle than the once or twice a year a typical backyard needs.
When is it time to call a crew?
Call when the smell comes back within a day of rinsing, when the traffic lanes stay flat after brushing, or when an HOA letter lands in the mailbox. Those are infill problems, and a hose and a broom will not solve them.
Here is what a visit looks like. We clear loose debris with a power broom and power sweep, apply a peroxide-based cleaning solution with focus on high-use and problem areas, and apply pet-friendly infill. Tough-smell yards also get the extractor. Every job ends with a final inspection, and we go back over anything that needs more attention.
We clean over 50 yards a month across San Diego County from our base in Poway. If we cleaned your turf in Poway, Rancho Bernardo, 4S Ranch or Scripps Ranch, we would love to hear about it in a Google review that names the service and your neighborhood.
